Monterey, also centrally located, just 92 miles east of Nashville, and 85 miles west of Knoxville on Interstate 40. With its cool climate and mountain scenery, Monterey used to be a summer resort in the early 1900’s. In its prime, Monterey boasted of at least eight hotels that catered to people wanting to escape the big city and spend the weekends on the mountain. Monterey still has that small town charm, boasting several shops in the center of town. Walking downtown you will find, antique shops, quilt shop, mom and pop restaurants, soda shop, floral shop, etc. This sleepy little town wakes up when the train brings the big city escapees for the day. This excitement happens four times a year. |
